Learn what HDL-Cholesterol measures and how it fits into your health data.

What is HDL-Cholesterol?

High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C), often termed "good" cholesterol, measures the amount of cholesterol carried by HDL particles. HDL is involved in reverse cholesterol transport, moving cholesterol away from arteries. While higher levels are generally correlated with lower cardiovascular risk, the functionality of HDL particles is also critical, not just the cholesterol quantity. Optimal levels are generally considered >50 mg/dL, but extremely high levels may not offer further benefit and the focus is shifting towards HDL function and particle characteristics.
