What is Prealbumin?

Prealbumin (transthyretin) is a protein made by the liver that transports thyroid hormones and vitamin A. Levels can decrease with inflammation, liver disease, and malnutrition. Because inflammation affects prealbumin independently of nutrition, results should be interpreted with clinical context and other tests rather than used alone to assess nutritional status.
