What is hCG, Total, Quantitative?
For males
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is usually undetectable or very low in men. Elevated levels should be interpreted with a clinician because they can occur with hCG use and, more rarely, with certain tumors. Quest uses a reference range below 5 mIU/mL.
For females
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), sometimes called beta hCG, is a hormone produced soon after implantation in pregnancy. Quantitative hCG is commonly used for early pregnancy detection and to follow early hCG trends, while also having non-pregnancy clinical uses. Interpretation depends heavily on timing and clinical context. Quest uses a reference range below 5 mIU/mL for non-pregnant or premenopausal women and below 10 mIU/mL for postmenopausal women.
