Creatine Kinase (CK), MB and Total
Overview:
Creatine Kinase (CK)
Creatine Kinase (CK or CPK) is an enzyme found primarily in heart muscle, skeletal muscle, and the brain. Elevated levels typically indicate muscle damage (e.g., from strenuous exercise, injury, certain medications like statins, or muscle diseases) or, less commonly, heart attack. Baseline levels vary, but significant elevations warrant investigation. CK levels can vary significantly based on physical activity and muscle mass. Always refer to the specific reference range provided by the testing laboratory.
Creatine Kinase (CK), MB
Creatine Kinase MB (CK-MB) is the myocardial-associated isoenzyme of creatine kinase. It has historically been used to help evaluate heart muscle injury and can still be useful alongside the clinical picture and other cardiac markers, especially when assessing timing or possible reinfarction. CK-MB is not fully heart-specific and can rise with significant skeletal muscle injury, so interpretation should consider symptoms, ECG findings, and other biomarkers.
