Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) With Z Score
Overview:
IGF-1 Z-Score
The IGF-1 Z-Score compares an individual's IGF-1 level to the average IGF-1 level for their age and sex. A Z-score of 0 means the level is exactly average. A positive score is above average, and a negative score is below average. It standardizes the IGF-1 value, making it easier to interpret across different age groups.
IGF-1
Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) is a hormone primarily produced by the liver in response to Growth Hormone (GH). It mediates many of GH's anabolic effects on growth and cell proliferation. Levels peak during puberty and decline with age. Low levels in adults can indicate GH deficiency, while high levels might suggest acromegaly. The role of IGF-1 in aging and longevity is complex; while essential for maintenance, excessive signaling through the GH/IGF-1 axis is linked to accelerated aging and cancer risk in some studies.
