Learn what Systolic Blood Pressure measures and how it fits into your health data.

What is Systolic Blood Pressure?

Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP) measures the pressure in arteries when the heart beats (contracts). It is the top number in a blood pressure reading (e.g., 120/80 mmHg). Elevated SBP (hypertension) is a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and cognitive decline. Optimal levels for longevity are generally considered to be below 120 mmHg, with some advocating for even lower targets (e.g., 110-115 mmHg) if achievable without side effects and measured properly (e.g., seated, rested, correct cuff size).
