What is Procalcitonin?

Procalcitonin (PCT) is a peptide precursor of calcitonin that is normally produced in very small amounts. Levels rise dramatically during bacterial infections and sepsis, making it a valuable biomarker for distinguishing bacterial from viral infections and guiding antibiotic therapy. PCT levels correlate with severity of bacterial infection and decline with successful treatment.
